Samuel Morrell (1850 – 23 May 1919) married Susannah Tankard (1849 – 26 April 1935) in Leeds, England in 1878. Their first child, Walter, was born on 6 June 1879, in Harrogate, England. A year later they emigrated to New Zealand on the ship St Leonard’s. Samuel was a bricklayer by occupation. When Wellington was finally starting to improve sanitation, in 1894 he was listed with many others as a licensed ‘drain connector’ under the City Corporation’s Sanitary By-law.
He was also in church choirs and is sometimes named as a singer in notices about church fundraisers. He was also an inventor. He patented, in several countries, a window-sash fastener, and went to England to oversee its manufacture in the late 1890s. They had five children and lived in Mt Victoria; Te Aro flat (College St) and finally in Rongotai.
His eldest son Walter is also on the same cemetery plaque. He became a carpenter and joiner, and with his wife Winifred (nee Read) and five children, lived in Berhampore. Their oldest daughter, Gwendrith (known as Gwen) and youngest Evelyn are also on the same plaque.
