Grave Finding

To begin a search the place to begin is the Wellington City Council records for cemetery burials.  You can search these details via their cemetery search website via the below link:

https://wellington.govt.nz/services/community-and-culture/cemeteries/search-cemetery-records

This website notes whether someone was buried or cremated. If buried, the specific plot number is given in the format Denominational Area / Row / Plot Number. For example Public/A/1 would be Public section / Row A / Plot 1. It is important to note that none of the sections or rows are marked at Karori Cemetery. The plots are not laid out in sequential number order either.

Wellington City Council have partially completed GPS tracking of the plots.  For the present, we are aware that finding plots can be somewhat challenging, especially the older ones.  The Friends are more than happy to assist with grave finding. Please contact us and we will assist.

Find A Grave Website

88% of the plots at Karori Cemetery have been photographed by volunteers for the Find a Grave website. This website also provides GPS coordinates of plot locations. Once the plot is located on their website, click on ‘Show Map’ for the GPS location. If you are at the cemetery and using a smart phone, this function will also provide directions to the specific plot location.
