‘On 24th May 1903, at the Wellington Hospital, Herbert Lune, aged 50. Regretted by all who knew him.’
Herbert was born in Newport, Wales in 1853. He married Mary Jane O’Brien in Bombay, India in 1881. In 1884 he was discharged from the military and provided with a pension. His seven children were born either in Wales or India.
In 1893, he separated from Mary (according to a tree on Ancestry). Herbert arrived alone in New Zealand on the ‘Zealandia’ from England in 1894. The passenger list stated his occupation was a clerk. His youngest child, Guinevere, was born in Newport after his arrival in New Zealand.
In 1896, he was living at Chalajont House in Jessie Street and described his occupation as ‘gentleman’. His wife Mary died in 1899 and his eldest son was sent to a boarding school. The younger children were all girls, and they remained in the care of Susan Robathan who was appointed their guardian. Alice Lyne as the eldest daughter was still head of the house. They appeared to have independent money to support themselves and the Lyne grandparents also lived in Newport and appeared to be relatively affluent. None of the children appear to have come to New Zealand at any stage.
No funeral notice was printed.
