While gardening in this plot in July, we found one of its missing railing posts and what appears to be the gate post to the plot. Unless there are better guesses? There are several roses in this plot that we are hoping to revive and so didn’t like to dig around too much for the missing gate. Next step will be to mulch and consider a ground cover plant.
This plot belongs to the Dimond family. The first interment was Bridget Dimond in 1902, aged 37. She was born in 1860 in London, England. Her parents were John and Catherine Linehan who were from Cork, Ireland. Her father was a labourer and her mother a milkwoman. Bridget married John Andrew Dimond in 1893, most likely in Wellington. They had three children before Bridget died on 4th February 1902 at her home in Murphy Street. Her illness had lasted two months.
The second interment is John’s sister-in-law, Helena Margaret Dimond. She was the daughter of George and Mary Shaw. George was a miner on the west coast. Helena married Henry Dimond in Hokitika on 7th March 1905. On 13th February 1906, she gave birth to twin boys named John and Henry. She died the same day. Henry remarried a few years later. Sadly one of the twins, John, died at the age of 10.
The third and final interment is John Andrew Dimond, husband of Bridget. John was born in Gabriels Gully, Otago. His parents were Andrew and Bridget Dimond who had emigrated from Armagh, Ireland in the early 1860s. John worked for the railways in various roles. He retired in 1910 after 28 years of service. A social gathering was held at the Lambton Railway Reading Room to mark the occasion. He was presented with a purse of sovereigns and an inscribed gold medallion. John died at Wellington Hospital on 21st August 1915. He was 48 years old.
