Susannah was born in 1857 in Enfield, Middlesex, England. She was the daughter of John James & Susannah Deadman (nee Waterman). John worked as a labourer and later a gunmaker, as did a number of his sons. By 1871, aged 14, Susannah had left home and was working as a general servant for the Hague family. Henry Hague was the foreman at the factory her father worked in.
Susannah married Barnabas Starr in 1877 at St George, Hanover Square, London. He was a confectioner living in Curzon Street. Their children Charles, Harry and Susannah were all born in Enfield. The family emigrated in 1893 on the ‘Ruapehu’. By now their children were aged 10, 11 and 16. Barnabas described his occupation as ‘draper’.
By 1896, the family were living at 46 Courtenay Place and Barnabas continued his trade as a baker and confectioner. In 1899, the Starrs took over the management of the Bank Luncheon Rooms in Cuba Street.
Susannah died on 1 September 1900. Barnabas remarried to Elizabeth Robertson in 1901. The groom was 45 and the bride was 20. According to Ancestry trees, he met Elizabeth through her sister May who was working as a waitress in his establishment. They had two children, Harold and Nellie.
Barnabas died in 1927 and was the second interment in this plot. Also interred in this plot are is his son Harry, Harry’s wife Margaret and daughter Reta. Harry was a baker like his father and was also chief chef at Bellamy’s restaurant for 22 years retiring in 1941. Daughter Susannah and her husband Henry Good are also interred in this plot.
