Florence Marian Capper was born in 1847 in Brixton, London, England. Her parents were John Henry and Mary Ann Capper (nee Wilson). John Capper worked as a stockbroker, but he did not know his place of birth on the 1851 census. A visitor to the house on the census night was Elizabeth Blackman who described her rank or profession as ‘Wanderer on the Fall of the World’ (if anyone can enlighten us, please do in the comments!). Elizabeth did not know her place of birth either.
The Capper family were living at 8 Grove Road, Brixton in 1851. There was a nurse to mind the 6 young Capper children and two general servants.
John Capper Esq. and family arrived in Wellington on the ‘Montmorency’ which sailed from Deal on the 24th December 1857. John appears to have worked as a land agent and ship’s agent out the back of T. Stephenson’s store on Lambton Quay. John died on 1st December 1865, aged 50.
On 21st January 1869, at the residence of the bride’s mother, Brougham Street, Florence married Samuel Carroll. Samuel’s father was an East India and China merchant of Mincing Lane, London. He left Samuel the business when he died, when Samuel was 27 years old.
Their first child was a daughter born on 20th November 1869 and they named Ada Florence. She was followed by three sisters named Getrude Marian, Catherine Eleanor and Edyth Agnes. A son named Charlton Wilson was born in 1881.
Gertrude Carroll married Charles Ogilvie on 26th February 1897 and died on the 13th December the same year. In 1901, Charles married Gertrude’s sister Ada and they had two children. Ada died in 1912, aged 42.
Florence died in 1903, aged 55. There was no death or funeral notice. Samuel died at their residence, 64 Brougham Street, aged 83 on 3rd December 1910.
